How can I make my uPVC conservatory look better?

Over the past 30 years, conservatories have been immensely popular, not least because they are a great way to add extra living space without having to upgrade to a bigger property.

It is thought that almost 20 per cent of homeowners in the UK have a conservatory. But while many of these will be up-to-the-minute in terms of design and energy efficiency, many more will be lacking insulation and beginning to look somewhat tired.

If your conservatory falls into the latter category, don’t panic – you really don’t need to knock it down and start again. There are several ways you can carry out all-around improvements on your uPVC conservatory without looking at a pile of rubble or even breaking the bank.

Replace the roof

One of the biggest improvements you can make to an old conservatory is to replace the old roof with a modern, energy-efficient alternative. Removing an old polycarbonate roof and replacing it with a new glass roof, or even an ultra-efficient solid or tiled roof will make a world of difference to your property both in terms of looks and energy efficiency. Modern glass, tiled, or hybrid conservatory roofs have much lower U-values than traditional old polycarbonate roofs, meaning they are much better at reducing heat loss during the winter and preventing the space from overheating during the summer. As an extra bonus, our modern roof replacements offer much better sound insulation against rain and wind noise too.

We have roofing options ranging from a tiled conservatory roof to a self-cleaning glass conservatory roof, and all our options are thermally efficient and aesthetically pleasing. Also, it is very unlikely that you will require planning permission for a new roof as long as you keep within certain conditions.

Change the windows

While uPVC is a resilient material and doesn’t need much maintenance, it can begin to look a little faded as the years pass. More important, however, is the fact that double glazing is more thermally efficient now than ever before. Your old windows could be costing you money in terms of heat loss and as we know, energy bills aren’t getting any lower. Our Comfort Glass range can achieve outstanding window energy ratings of A and U-values as low as 1.3 W/m2K, and can also stop 56 per cent more internal heat from escaping. It’s also 20 per cent more sound-proofed too – a distinct advantage if you live in a built-up area.

Change the door

A simple change like a new door can breathe new life into an existing conservatory. Installing a new set of French, bi-fold, or sliding patio doors can open your conservatory and provide a seamless transition between your home and garden.

At A&B Asset, our range of aluminium sliding patio and bi-fold doors are the perfect upgrades to reinvigorate your conservatory, giving it a modern and contemporary feel. Plus, thanks to their insulated cavities that can achieve U-vales as low as 1.32W/m2k, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views of, and uninterrupted access to your garden space all while reducing your energy bills.

Furthermore, our patio and bi-fold doors come with toughened double glazing and 8-point locks as standard for added security. Our aluminium frames are maintenance-free, corrosion-resistant, won’t rust or warp, and are available in 150 RAL colours and a range of woodgrain effects.

Make it open-plan

A conservatory used to be a place to hang out during the summer months only. This isn’t the case now, as the space needs to work all year round – and with modern upgrades like a replacement roof and thermally-efficient windows and doors, there’s no reason it can’t be.

So why not take away the separation from your house by making the conservatory more open by removing doors and walls between your house and the conservatory? You will need Building Regulations approval to do this, of course, but it will help create the illusion of extra space, as well making your conservatory feel like it is really a part of your home.
