Window Aftercare

After installing your new windows, you expect them to serve you for a long time without any problem. You also expect them to look good for many years to come. This is why we give a ten year guarantee on all our products. But it
is important to keep in mind some basic care tips when it comes to looking after your new windows.

Window Cleaning

UPVC window are almost maintenance free. You have to do very little to maintain them. To clean your UPVC windows, keep the following cleaning tips in mind;

  • Do not use any abrasive material as this will scratch the surface of the window frames. Abrasive materials will interfere with the shine of the UPVC windows.
  • Wipe the UPVC surfaces with a soft cloth and plain water

If the frames are made from hardwood, keep the following aftercare tips in mind to keep them looking good;

  • Clean your wooden frames using warm water and leave it to dry naturally. Do not try to wipe away the water.
  • Apply a micro-porous sealant to the wooden window frames at least once a year. The sealant helps a lot to protect the hardwood from elements that may damage the wood.
  • Before you apply the sealant, make sure that the surface is clean, dry and free from dust. Do not apply anything else other than a micro-porous sealant. This is because the micro-porous sealant allows the wood to breath.

Cleaning the glass

You should clean the glass using the normal glass cleaners. It does not matter whether it is double or triple glazed. Clean both the interior and the exterior surfaces.

Maintaining your windows

To maintain your window so that they work at their best for years to come, keep the following maintenance tips in mind;

  • Spray the locks and adjustments with some WD40 or similar silicone based product at least twice a year to keep them in good shape.
  • If you feel that there is a need to loosen or tighten friction hinges that have been used, insert a small screw driver after opening the window to reach the head of the screw and turn it until you achieve the desired effect.

The lead may develop white or mottled spots when exposed to the rain. It will take a couple of months before the whole lead work turns to dark grey and will no longer change. This is completely normal.

If there is anything that you need to fix or you have any concerns. Feel free to contact us by filling out an online form. We will respond to your queries as soon as we can.

Door Aftercare

After the installation of your new doors, you’ll want to keep your doors looking good and working well. To achieve this you just have to follow some basic care instructions. The mechanism used to operate a front and a back door is the same. Therefore, the basic care instructions will apply for both doors.

Your door will always close on the latch. However, this does not mean that it will be draught proof or secure. To ensure that the door is draught proof, you have to make sure that the handle is almost at a horizontal position. You first have to lift the handle to a vertical position and then leave it to go back to a horizontal position by itself to engage the steel plate mechanism on the frame.

Door Lock

If you have installed UPVC doors in your home, you have to keep the following cleaning instructions in mind;

  • Do not use things that are abrasive to clean the doors. This is because abrasives will scratch the door’s surface and destroy the shine of the UPVC doors.
  • Use a damp cloth to clean the doors. UPVC doors do not require a special solution or a special cleaning method to become clean. Just use a soft cloth soaked in water. The fact that UPVC doors are maintenance free is one of the reasons why they are so popular.

If your frames have been made from hardwood, keep the following cleaning instruction in mind when cleaning the doors;

  • Use clean warm water to clean the hardwood and let it dry naturally.
  • Apply micro-porous sealant to the doors at least once a year. The sealant helps a lot to protect the hardwood from the elements which can cause damage and helps to ensure the doors look good.
  • Make sure that the surface of the hardwood is clean and dry before you apply the micro-porous sealant.

What about the parts made from glass?

If you have parts of your door made from glass, you can clean the glass using a normal glass cleaner.

Caring after the mechanical parts of the door

To keep the mechanical parts of the door working their best, you have to ensure that they are lubricated using a silicone based product such as WD40.

Sometimes, you may notice that there is some water at the bottom of the door frame after heavy showers. This is not something that you should be worried about. This water will evaporate or drain through the drainage holes at the base.

If you have any lead work, oxidization will start when it is exposed to water. This will lead to the formation of stains which will appear as white or mottled patches. Eventually the whole lead work will turn into grey and there will be no further staining. This process can take a few months to be complete and is completely normal.

Although it is very rare to have a problem with these doors, you should not hesitate to talk to us if you have a problem. Fill out a form online and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Conservatory Aftercare

As a new conservatory can be a large investment, you will want to make sure that you are confident that your conservatory will continue to look as good as it did on the first day it was installed. Here are a few tips to help you keep your conservatory looking its very best for many years to come.

Conservatory Roof

  • Never use anything abrasive to clean your UPVC conservatory as this can sometimes scratch the surface and then remove any shine from the material. It can also let further dirt build up over time. Just a simple wipe down with a clean cloth is more than sufficient for keeping your UPVC conservatory looking its very best for the future.
  • If you have a hardwood conservatory, you can wash the structure using clean warm water and letting it dry naturally. Every year you can apply a sealant to the wood to keep it from becoming damaged and warping over time. Using a mild sealant will still let the hardwood ‘breathe’ but will protect it against the elements and adverse weather conditions in the future. Remember – make sure that the surface of your hardwood conservatory is dry and free from any dust or grime before you apply the sealant.
  • The glass of your conservatory can be cleaned with any glass cleaner that you already have.
  • To make sure that any locks or adjustments to your conservatory are in good working order, you can spray them every six months with a silicone product such as WD40. This will ensure that any locks are easy to open and perform to an optimal standard in the future.
  • If you want to loosen or tighten the friction hinges on your conservatory windows, just open the window and use a small screwdriver in the screw on the hinge. Turn the hinge slowly until you have either tightened or loosened the item.
  • To make sure that your conservatory is well drained, clear any leaves or debris from the guttering on your conservatory and main property.
  • After heavy rain, water can sometimes build up in window drains or at the bottom of your conservatory doors. This is nothing to worry about, and the water will eventually evaporate or drain itself through the drainage holes in the base of the structure.
  • When new lead work is exposed to heavy rain, it can start to oxidise or become stained. You may therefore notice that the lead will darken over time, but after this process is complete, it will no longer stain. This process can take a few months.
