Although the new school year has just begun, Octobers Autumn Half Term (from 19th October) is looming just around the corner. At A&B-Asset’s we always like to be prepared, so with this in mind, we thought we’d save you some time by listing our top 10 free days out in Suffolk.

  1. Blissful Beaches

With spells of barbeque weather expected in Britain throughout the Autumn this year, Suffolk has many gorgeous beaches to enjoy; absolutely free of charge. Right on our doorstep is the sand & shingle mixed beach in Felixstowe, the quintessential family-friendly seaside town which is also the beginning of Suffolk’s prized Coastal Path. Or why not go a bit further afield, towards ‘The Sunrise Coast?’ Where the golden sandy beaches of Lowestoft or the peace and quiet of Southwold’s Denes Beach are ready and waiting.

Suffolk has many beautiful green spaces to enjoy, whatever the weather. So, this Autumn why not get out and about in the fresh air for a relaxing walk or allow the little ones to let off steam by visiting one of Suffolk’s free outdoor play areas? High on our list is The Sudbury Water Meadow Walk, Alton Water Reservoir, Ipswich’ Christchurch Park, the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, Rendlesham Forest near Woodbridge and Martello Park in Felixstowe.

With a wide range of events taking place from now straight through to December, Suffolk’s libraries offer story readings, author presentations, quizzes, arts & craft workshops and much more. Providing your brain with a great work out, Suffolk’s libraries are located in Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Framlingham, Halesworth, Bungay, Beccles, Oulton Broad and Lowestoft.

Enjoy the local scenery whilst keeping fit, with a classic bike ride. Discover areas in Suffolk you never knew existed, via various routes around the country.

Lavenham is a true hidden gem in Suffolk’s crown. With so much to see and do surrounded by charming countryside, it’s considered Britain’s best-preserved medieval village as well as one of Suffolk’s most important wool towns. With many sites of historical interest, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Suffolk’s Shingle Street is a small coastal town that’s bursting with mystery and conspiracy theories, following four dead German airmen that washed up on its beach and weapons testing that resulted in the Lifeboat Inn being blown up! The remoteness of Shingle Street must be seen to be believed, whilst relishing the unique peace & quiet and abundance of wildlife.

If you love history and horses, then The Suffolk Punch Trust site in Hollesley is definitely worth a visit. There’s no admission charge for entry to the café only, a small entrance fee to access the visitor centre and farm where children under 5 get in for free. Incredibly budget friendly, once you’ve paid to visit you can enjoy free entry throughout the year!

  1. Riverbank retreat

With the River Orwell just on our doorstep, retreat to one of Suffolk’s many remarkable rivers with a picnic and a good book for a terrifically tranquil day out. You could even hire a boat for a small fee and appreciate the river from a completely different viewpoint.
